165 won't start, just makes a click. Solenoid or starter?

Thank you so much for this info. My MF165 began having trouble starting. Solenoid clicking. Why it would finally turn over sometimes, I don't know. Then it would not start. Boosting did not work.

Followed advice of battery check, cleaning/changing connections, jumped the solenoid between the two contacts on it but I did not like the sparks. Did not work, anyway. Tried the jumper from positive battery to starter nub. BINGO!

I read somewhere that even if the solenoid clicks does not necessarily mean it is still good and therefore a starter problem. I did notice that the clicking sound from the solenoid did change after repeatedly turning the ignition key. I could feel the clank through the body of the tractor.

Much rather change a solenoid than a starter.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and advice!

Old solenoid usually will work like new again, just remove the wires and nuts from the top battery bolt, push the bolt IN and give it 1/2 turn. Then pull it back out and replace all the removed nuts and wires as before. Has a square carriage bolt head inside, turning it puts the unworn bolt head area in play so it will work like new again. What happens is over time the bolt head wears, then the contact washer can't hit BOTH heavy bolts as it should..
