Getting the main shift lever unstuck
Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. If hung in second or third gear you have to pry on the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. if hung in second pry the fork toward the front of the tractor. If hung in third pry the fork toward the back of the tractor. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them

It may also help to jack the back
wheels off the ground and rotate them
by hand to get the oil coating the
gears and sliders. Then try working it
free with a bar. Our 202 was stick and
this helped.

John Deere D is exactly right. You do not need to remove steering gear box to access gears. use a powerful flashlight and stout flat screwdriver and you will be able to get unstuck. I have not unstuck thousands but I have done a few.

I tried the procedure but can't get the gear to move. Do I need to tap it, afraid to smack it hard. toward the rear? Had it in neutral and could roll the tractor, so no pressure on it. It's the big gear that's slightly to the front of the hole that I'm trying to push back, correct? The forwardreverse in the 202 is the shift lever, (shtlltle shifter?) so reverse is not on the gear shifter.

With the 202 the reverse is "locked out" of where it would normally be because the reverse is in the shuttle shift next to the L-S-H shift lever.

There is a pin that holds the shuttle, and high, and low levers in because they use the same hole. If you can knock that pin out to the right hand side you can simply remove the shuttle, and high low levers together (there is noting that can fall into the transmission). Get the shuttle back into neutral, then put the levers, and the pin back in. There maybe an easer way to do it, but I've never had to un-stick the actual shuttle shift.

Unfortunately the tractor is 80 miles away so I have to wait for the weekend to get look at it. It is not stuck in neutral, the shuttle shifter works fine. It stick in first gear, so I have first hear high and first gear low, in forward and reverse. Seems like the solution should be in the procedure described before, but. I can't seem to get the gear moved. Apparently this should be easy, but it does t want to move. Wondering if I am missing something

Then you need to pry the big gear to the back to get it out of first gear, and back into neutral (when you put it in first gear the shift lever moves the big gear forward)
