Re: MF 124 baler - part 2

The dog keeps the ram from pushing a wad of hay into the needles and breaking them. I'm not sure of timing on the MF baler but all that I have timed I remove all hay from the chamber so I can see plainly what is happening. Then turn the baler over a couple times slowly by hand and when the ram is all the way to the fully extended position release the lever that sets the needles to tie. Turn slowly and when the needles start into the chamber they should be about 1 1/2 inches behind the front of the ram. That way all hay is ahead of the needles. Hope I explained it so you can understand it.

sounds like your 180 degrees off your plunger should be all the way back when the needles go up needles go up inside the plunger get the owners manual it has the timing set in it

Hi Phil,
You certainly explained it so that I understood it!!!!! Yes that is correct. The points on the plunger must be past the tips of the needles as they enter the chamber so that no charge of crop can break them. Yes, to add a little about the plunger dog- the dog enters the chamber when the needle cycle is taking place. If for example a chain should break or the needle yoke arm fail to retract for some reason the dog will still be engaged the next time the plunger comes down the chamber resulting in a broken shear bolt.
