Massey Ferguson 50 Won't Start

Hello,

I am new to forum and I have limited mechanic skills but I am hoping making this tractor start will be an easy task. I've been doing some reading online and I've looked at the tractor some today but I don't have any testers.

It is a Massey Ferguson 50 Gas. Engine is z134

I had used the tractor a few times about 7 years ago and it has sat outside covered with a tarp for the past 7 years. I am attempting to start it back up again.

I have a new battery in the tractor. It will turn but not start. It's all fueled up.

I believe the problem is there is no spark. I pulled the spark plug wire off and tried to start it while I held it a 1/4 inch from metal and it will not spark. I checked all 4 spark plug wires and there is no spark on any of them.

Like I said my skills/knowledge as a mechanic are limited. I opened up the distributor cap and the center piece is spinning? But no spark?

What do I do?

After 7 yrs it could be different things. Is the wiring and key switch OK? First remove
cap and rotor-turn key on and take screwdriver and open points a little to see if there
is a spark. If spark check points to see if they are opening when turning engine
over.Points should be set at 22.Also you may have to replace points. If no spark take
16 gauge wire or smaller and run from coil on + side to battery hot post.See if your
getting fire to points. If no fire it's bad coil.If fire replace cap- rotor and it
should run if getting gas. Also you can remove small bolts in bottom carburetor and let
gas run out to remove any water and see if your getting gas. Be careful with wire from
battery to coil because it will start in gear.

Hello,

I've attached a photo. I have a 12v circuit tester and I am getting it to light up in the orange areas but the pink area is not lighting up at all. Should there be 12v here?

Also how do I remove the rotor to see the points.? Does it just pull out?

The pink doesn't have fire until you start engine. Take screwdriver to unsnap clips on distributor cap. The rotor will just pull off then
remove cover plate to see points. Line up notches on both rotor & cover to replace.
Check inside distributor for corrosion. Also file points if needed after setting if
needed.

after seven years you probably need points and condenser and maybe new spark plugs. not hard to do. just take your time. take pics of what you take apart for reference when putting new parts on. you can get those parts from this site.

Thanks for your help. I just watched a video on this about the points and the condenser on how to clean the points and put a new one back in. However the rotor doesn't seem to pull off. I tried to pull it off after taking the distributor cap off and it won't come up. It seems like it's really made on there. Is there any other way it could be attached or should I just really yank up on it?

I don't want to break anything.

Here is a picture of the rotor after the cap was removed.

This looks a little different than some I have seen in pictures and videos. It just pulls right off?

Sometimes the rotor gets really stuck (rust between the shaft, and rotor), or depending on who made the rotor it may fit too tight to the shaft of the distributor. It should just pull straight off.

I GOT IT RUNNING! It was the condenser and the point just needed cleaned!

I already took a joy ride on it and it sounds great! Thanks for everyone's help!
