Importance of checking valve clearance

I own a Massey 461 with a Perkins engine. Tractor has just under 700 hours and has never had the valve clearance checked. From what I can tell a good bit of stuff has to be moved to gain access so i'm wondering how critical it is to check the valves. The tractor has a slight tapping sound when cold which seems to go away once warm. Thoughts?

Thank you,

Slight tapping noise when cold but goes away when warm!

My suggestion: Turn the radio up a little more and don't worry about it!

Agreed. But was reading the manual which said to check them early on so wanted to see what you guys thought.

That is a pretty new(ish) machine. Are the lifters in that one solid or hydraulic? If they are making noise this early on you might want to get in there and find out why. What oil are you running?

Well the las time I put in a 5/40 Rotella should I go back to the standard 15/40?

Some engines can get a little noisy when you do that and some not. Just depends...
For example i use rotella t6(5w40) in my atv and the valve train is a little noisy but quiets right down if i use a 15w40 oil. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong or you are causing damage. Just the way some engines are.
You could always put a 15w40 oil in there and see if the sewing machine noise stops and decide from there. If the noise is still there then the valves probably need adjusting. If the noise goes away then you are probably fine.

try the 15/40 it will most likely help, if not you may need to check the valve clearances, normally they don't require adjustment with only 700 hrs. but that doesn't always hold true, as for 5/40 unless you are operating in a cold climate I would not use that light weight of oil.
