MF 35 PTO driven gear wont go into ground speed position

Hello, I have what I believe is a late 50s MF35, not sure of exact year. The PTO driven gear does not move all the way back into the ground speed position. I already have opened the hydraulics top cover but still cannot figure out the reason. Any help is much appreciated.

If this is like the MF tractors I have had the lever is pushed down for ground speed. up= engine driven : center = off: down = ground.

That is true when everything works as it is supposed to. when you move the lever, there is a gear that moves on the lift pump shaft, see the figure number 2 in the link below.

on my tractor for some reason the gear does not go to position 2c.

my TO35 to engage the pto you pull up on the lever
ground speed is down.

note: when you get it sorted out, you can use ground speed with tractor in reverse to unstop a corn picker as the pto shaft will turn in reverse as you back up,
you can also jack up one wheel and place gear shift in reverse using ground speed pto you can make a post hole digger reverse itself right out of a hole, if you ever get one stuck in the hole, like under a root or sum such. very good to know this if you ever need it.

when I had the clutch replaced on my TO35 years ago, the pto was very tight, hard to shift into gear, I had to turn motor off and place pto in gear then restart motor, clutch worked find and if you pushed all the way down on the clutch the pto stopped, so it was not unsafe. just hard to get in gear.
but after a few days of hard bush hogging it got better and now its no problem to shift into gear.
time and hard work fixes a lot of things.

Thanks everyone for comments.

Bob: thanks for the diagram, which manual is it from? i would not mind getting a copy.
As I mentioned in my original post. I already have the hydraulics lift cover off of the tractor. the pump pistons were badly worn on one side and one of the dowel pins holding the pump was broken. I am trying to remove the pump for servicing or replacement but for now I am having a difficulty moving the PTO driven gear back to ground PTO position to remove the pump.
Any advice on how to get access to the "problem area" without being able to remove the pump? Thanks a lot in advance...

I had to SPLIT my MF FE-35 at the point where the Transmission attached to the Diff. housing to replace a leaking Gasket:

I also replaced the DRIVE COUPLING:

Try placing a "PRY BAR/Block of wood or something in such a way so as to push the PTO DRIVE GEAR AFT. At the same time have someone Rotate the PTO SHAFT CCW / CW:

If you have to split the Transmission from the Diff. as per pictures, the PUMP in my MF 35 slid forward and out of the DIFF. Housing:

Thanks, I will try a pry bar a try ... hopefully I don't have to split the tractor.

I will try to check all the couplings and shafts for wear. for now there seems to be fair amount of play when i rock the pinion gear by hand. is this normal? or should I assume that my planetary gear and the pinion need replacing?

The output shaft in the back of the planetary has a little slop to it and you can just pull it straight out to remove it. The pinion gear will have some side to side movement but only a little. Like a few thousandths worth. If you can move it up and down or in and out you have a problem.
Slide the pto gear onto the pump and pull the pto shaft out the back. After that you should be able to slide the pto gear off the pump shaft and inspect it. Pull your pump and repair.

[email protected] ..... I originally INSPECTED the BACKLASH AFT of the Transmission, as I NOTICED to much backlash in the fact that the brake drums and axel assembly's would turn an unacceptable amount of degrees, before the Pinion gear would start to turn.
Upon investigation the BACKLASH was due to the COUPLING as per pictures, as well as the NUT that sets the PRELOAD on the PIION BEARING was incorrect.
See pictures from SERVICE manual: After I Torqued the PRELOAD on the PINION Bearings and replaced the COUPLING as per Picture the backlash was fine.

I would not think you have any problem in the Planetary assembly on the output of your transmission.
I also replaced the HYDRAULIC PUMP. Tractor has been put to work. Tractor has ran great for the past 40 Hrs. Most Owners do not REPLACE the HYD.PUMP.

Check to verify if NUT is loose...

Most of the Backlash on my MF FE-35 drivetrain was from this nut being to LOOSE.....

I have a 35 that had the same issue and I couldn't remove the pump because the ground speed gear wouldn't move towards the back enough to clear the shaft. Turned out the PTO bearing retainer that is pressed into the rear end casting and moved forward which didn't allow enough travel for the ground speed gear coupler. I had to split the tractor behind the transmission so I could get everything out then pounded the bearing retainer back into place. I figure someone was trying to install the PTO shaft and pounded it in while it was caught on the bearing retainer and moved it back.

Thanks a lot for all the images and useful comments. over the weekend I will try to wrestle the gear back to the ground speed position. worst comes to worst i think i will cut a 2 inch section out of pump shaft. I really would like to avoid splitting the tractor at the moment.

You are probably aware, there is a COUPLING between the OUTPUT SHAFT of the Transmission and the INPUT Shaft of the HYD. pump. If you "REMOVE the Cotter pin" from the Coupling, will this assist in movement forward of the HYD. Pump? I have never tried this .

Thanks everyone, after some consideration I think to avoid splitting the tractor I am going to cut a 2" section out of the shaft on the hydraulics pump . this should allow me to remove the pump and then the gear to further examine the issue. I will let you know what i find out.

I have already removed the cotter pin from the coupling in the OUTPUT SHAFT of the Transmission and the INPUT Shaft of the HYD. pump. There is not enough clearance. I even considered disassembling the pump while inside the housing but I think the fastest solution for removing the pump without splitting the tractor or causing any further damage is to cut a section out of the hyd. pump shaft.

I finally cut the shaft on the hydraulics pump and removed the pump. As John Deere D suggested the problem was in the circled area on the first picture above.
the small bearing pressed into the hydraulics pump shaft was damaged and one of the bearing rollers was jammed in the helical grove in the bush that's pressed into the housing where the PTO selector gear slides in and out (item #3 in the schematics above). the jammed roller has made a raised lip in the bush preventing the PTO selector gear from sliding all the way into the ground position see the attached pictures.

the question is
1) how to remove that bush? any help will be greatly appreciated. and 2) does anyone know the part number for that bush.
