240S - Gauge Problem

I recently purchased a 1998 MF 240S with less than 400 hours. I noticed the tach was working properly when I test drove it but foolishly didn't take the time to carefully inspect the rest of the gauges. The prior owner verbally confirmed they worked.

The oil pressure idiot light, fuel level and water temp gauges do not work. I don't know if it has a horn but does not work if there is one. Everything else works fine, including all of the lights and road flashers.

The manual references a single fuse block with six circuits. Interestingly enough, one of the fuses supports the "engine oil pressure warning light, fuel gauge, fuel tank sender unit, engine temperature gauge and brake lights". However, none of the six fuses were blown and I have continuity at each of the six fuses. Although not documented in the manual, I discovered two in-line 8A fuses wired into the large light switch. One is a yellow wire with good fuse and continuity. The other is a white wire that does NOT have continuity regardless of the position of the light switch. It appeared the original glass fuse was blown and I replaced it-- but still "no go" with the oil pressure idiot light, fuel and temp gauge.

I'm completely stumped. Any ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
 
My 240-S had similar problems, I finally found there were two extra mystery fuses, in two little black twist-together fuse holders, under the dash. Sort of behind the tach area. Hard to find, but I found them. I replaced the fuses and everything works. These little extra fuses do not show up on any wiring diagram or in any manual. As I remember it I didn't know what fuse to use to replace them, so I used a small one, and it blew so I went to a bigger one. THIS MAY NOT CURE YOUR PRLBLEM. The lesson I learned is the electrical systems on MF tractors are variable.... might be this.... on the other hand it might just be that....
 
I believe I discovered the same two in-line fuses you mentioned (one with a yellow wire, one with a white wire). Both appeared to have 8 amp glass fuses. The yellow wire had continuity and a good fuse. The white wire has no continuity and what appeared to be a blown fuse which I replaced....still no difference. Any thoughts?
 
My only thought is to keep looking, keep investigating. I think the Turkish makers of these [ Was it Uzel ??] just made a few modification as they went along, and didn't tell anybody. But sorry, I have no idea.

Yes, mine has a plate identifying it as Uzel, made in Turkey. I'm starting to think you and I may own the only two 240-S tractors in North America :D
 
I've learned a few things about it. Warm it up at 1200 rpm for 3 minutes, do not just let it sit and lope along at idle to warm up. Operate at 1700 rpm. Those two speeds , as specified in the owner's manual, will make that Perkins engine very happy, it will not slobber fuel, as the saying goes. I run some Howe's additive in the fuel. Don't over-grease the steering column, just a shot of grease or two. I like the 240-S a lot.
 

Thank you for those tips; I'll certainly follow your advice. One question- have you found that parts for the 240-S are the same as the 240? I assume commonly replaceable parts such as oil, gas and air filters would be the same but wonder about other components.
 
As far as I know, with a few exceptions like a few electrical details, everything else is identical. The S was made by Uzel, but everything else is identical. The engine is a Perkins, but as to whether or not it was actually made by Uzel under license, in Turkey, I don't know. The electrical flasher unit thing was hard to replace, but I found somehow one of them someplace, on-line.
Great tractor. Sips fuel very slowly.
