1973 MF 175...PTO

Have a '73 American made 175 gas with "independent" PTO. Have owner man but not service man. Pto shaft stays running when lever is off..even if you put boot against it. Easy fix or no?

Something wrong with the brake, and/or clutch discs and separator plates burned and warped bad enough the brake can't stop the drum. If the drum assembly needs to come out lift cover and trans-diff split will be needed..

So, can I assume by your answer, that the lever , when to the rear (actuated) tightens up a clutch pack within a drum and rotates shaft and when lever is forward, it relaxes the clutch plates/discs and at same time applies a mechanical brake to the whole drum ? If so, then you are saying that warped discs would not now have the required clearance between them to actually release or at least not enough for the brake to hold it ? Is there any adjustment on the brake itself or is a work or not type set-up? Seems like if things were worn out, it would do just the opposite and would slip when trying to use it to run something. Thanks for you answers. RB

PTO drum brake is a small hydraulic cylinder, not strong enough to stop a drum with warped plates inside. If the tractor has MF transmission does that work OK? Low oil level is what usually kills those clutch packs. Dad's 180 had warped plates years ago, PTO would not stop, had to shut the engine off to hook up to the PTO shaft. Then it might start an easy load and pull fine once the warped plates were engaged, but would not start a heavier load.

It has been over 40 years since I have been into one of those, but I think the PTO brake is also hydraulically actuated. You should be able to spin the shaft by hand when the engine is not running. Low pressure could cause the discs to warp.

You will need to lever a 2x4 against the PTO shaft to stop it. The small brake cylinder on my 150 was stuck and wouldn't apply pressure to the disk. I had to get a small lever in behind the piston to free it. The right inspection cover had to come off.

There should be a TEST port at the left cover, near the control lever. Pressure (without MF) should be 125 PSI with PTO engaged. There is a filter for the IPTO pump, but lift cover has to be removed to get to it.

The brake (when working) will NOT stop equipment. I believe it was intended to HOLD PTO shaft.
