MF165 oil pump pickup position

quick question on which way the MF165 oil pump pickup should be in the sump. Vertical or Horizontal? I have been having issues with my oil pressure for the past few years. when the tractor is started (cold) I have normal oil pressure. but after it warms up and get hot, the oil pressure would go to middle low and now is starting to show low/low after about an hour of use. so I figured it was the oil pump. but when I dropped the oil pan, the screen for the pickup was vertical. others that I have seen, mostly on cars, were always horizontal. vertical seems wrong to me as it could be sucking air, but am not sure as I have not a lot of experience working the MF tractors. so I thought I would put this to the experts out there. thanks for the help!

Which engine do you have? Most of tractor engines have a pickup that will swivel. With the pan off can you move it around or is it fixed in that vertical position?

sorry I left that out -- it is a Continental G-176. and it does seem to swivel. I know it moved (back and forth like is should swivel) when I dropped the oil pan, that is why I though it was broken. but will have to double check tonight after work. so that is normal to swivel? I don't remember seeing that on my farmall cub, super A or IH 154 I have -- but of course different mfg. I also have a MF35, but have never dropped the oil pan. thanks again for the help.

It's normal for it to swivel like that. If you are losing pressure when it gets hot then you might want to drop the bearing caps and have a look. Usually worn bearings is what causes that.

oh..that is not good news. I know it seems to have gotten a small knock in the last year or so. not too bad, but I figured the bearings for that. again it is just slight and you almost can't hear it. I was hoping to limp along until some day I could have time to tear it down since I guess I would need to pull the crank and such. I was hoping it was just the oil pump and the oil thinning when it got hot. thanks again
