MF245, Draft Control and Bush Hog

I'm having trouble getting the bush hog deck to stay at a constant level with a MF 245.

I've read the manual, but clearly something is not set correctly.

The land is relatively flat.

Initially, the deck is at the correct position with the back end slightly higher than the front end (nearest the tractor).

Shortly after moving, the deck slowly starts digging into the ground.

Any ideas on how to correct this ?

Do you have the draft control lever (the outside lever next to the position control lever) all the way back? The draft control lever should be all the way back (except when using a ground engaging equipment like a plow) you should only be using the position control lever.

By "all the way back" do you mean at the top of the quadrant or at the bottom (front) of it?

At the top of the quadrant.

At the top of the quadrant.

Ok, now I'm confused. I know we're talking about an MF245 here but I'm thinking about my MF202 Workbull.

While using the position control lever and my back blade, I leave the draft control lever all the way down at the bottom. Isn't that what I'm supposed to do? The operators manual that I have is a little confusing on this issue.

I would think the workbull would be the same as the 245, they are pretty much the same tractor basically. I use a rear blade on my 135 the same way, draft control lever all the way up, and use just the position control lever. Give it a try, and see if it works better, or not.

If I pull the draft control lever all the way up, the lift arms rise all the way to the top.

I leave the draft control lever fully down (lift arms on bottom) and use the position control lever to work the box blade.

ptfarmer,

That worked.

Thank you.

While that seemed to work, after about 45 minutes the deck starts lowering and eventually scraping the ground.

It's also difficult to get the deck raised again as the PTO arms don't respond to moving the position control lever.

I have to turn off and restart the engine, place the gear in neutral, push down the clutch and then bring the clutch back up half way to get the arms to raise.

Is this normal ?

That's not normal, the strainer for the 3 point pump must be getting plugged up. The strainer is accessed by removing the round cover where the pto lever is. You will nned to drain some of the trans/hydraulic oil before removing the cover.
