Hi guys,

My 135 has no brakes at all. Yesterday I popped the drum off and found out only the top pad was being actuated by the brake rod. The bottom one seems fine and is free. My question is how much play is the brake rod supposed to have going into the drum? Mine has about 3/4 of an inch of up and down play. When you step on the brake pedal it moves up and can only move the top pad.

On my 35 when I had it apart I swapped the actuating rods from side to side, so the worn ends would not be in play anymore. With both shoes in place against the anchor pin there should be no up-down play. After cleaning the oil from the shoes the brakes work like new again..

Hi, the pins in the front of the brake rods are normally free due to
oil fumes from the engine. The rears can be a little more of a
problem and can be removed with the backplate and brake shaft if
necessary. If you have to remove them with the brakeshaft you will
need to remove the footplate and support brackets to make it easier.
With the two retaining springs and plate removed from the anchor pins
it is possible to withdraw the shaft a little so that it can be
turned to access the underside of the cam. Grind the surrounding
metal down to the bottom of the worn area and build up with weld and
grind back so that the cams are just a few thou thicker than the
original thickness of the cam. Maintain the flat end face so that the
plate will fit. Reassembly and adjustment is as per my postings. This
is very important that it is done as described.
Prior to any stripping a check for worn cams is to apply the brakes
and look at the operating arm on the brake shaft. Ideally it should
be approaching the 6 o'clock position but if it is past this and
approaching the seven o'clock position you will be losing leverage on
the shoes and ultimately your braking efficiency.

One other thing to check. Take the shoes off and check the pads on the backing plate where the shoes ride. If there is a deep groove worn into them then it could be holding the shoes and not letting them actuate correctly. This would cause the bad wear that davidp is describing along with your one shoe wear issue. Weld the groves up and grind them flat again along with whatever other repairs are needed.

Guys it seems that the back plate itself is worn out judging by the egg shaped hole and up and down play of the brake rod. I think I may have to replace them. Anyone have these wear out on them/replace them?
