Massey 135 Hydrualic Issues

I have Massey 135 Perkins Gas (1973 Model), I will not consistently pick up heavier implements (ie Brush Hog, Disc, ...) When I say Consistently, I mean most of the time it will only pick them up a few
inches but on occasion it will lift them all the way up. I believe it is an issue with the third link adjustment or something on the linkages inside the cover. I have seen several references to Big Dean's
Repair CD but none of the links I have found work. Does anyone know where I can purchase one of these CD's? Thanks in Advance.

My 135 was lifting OK, then it started only lifting a couple inches. I thought I had checked all of the fluids when I bought it. I parked it in my driveway and it never dripped, so I never checked it. Sure enough, it was low on fluid. Topped it off and works great. Did you check the fluid level? Joe.

Big Dean passed away a few years ago so his CD's are no longer available. Your no lift problem can be an adjustment (broken, out of place, or missing internal linkage part(s), plugged strainer for the hydraulic pump, or the seals for the 3 point lift cylinder are shot. You can drain some of the trans/hydraulic fluid, remove the round cover on the left hand side to see the strainer, or the round right hand cover for some of the linkage. If the strainer clogged clean, or replace it, if the strainer looks good block the tractor, and lock the brakes so it doesn't roll on you, start the tractor, and work the 3 point levers while looking inside through the side cover with a flash light (don't stick you hands inside). While working the 3 point with a load on it look up inside, if you see hydraulic fluid coming down like its "raining", the lift cylinder seals are more than likely needs replacing. I have found with most of the ones I work on that the lift the lift cylinder seals are no good.

I was afraid that was the case since I could not find any current info. That was my plan tonight hopefully if not this weekend, is to open it up and watch what is happening. I put a new cylinder in about a year ago so I hope its not that already because that was a pain. I was hoping to have some more info on adjustments when I get in there. The reason I think its adjustment is sometimes it will lift my bush hog all the way (it seems to be random when it does it) but most of the time it only lifts it about 12" off the ground. I have read several post that lead me to believe the spring on the third arm linkage probably needs adjusted but but want to know how before I adjust it. Thanks for the input so far.

I would take the right side cover off, and look at the linkage working the control valve. Since it's a intermittent problem seems like it could be the control valve in the pump is sticking. If it was some kind of linkage adjustment I don't think it would work intermittently, but you never know.

I suspect it's more a pump/strainer issue than an issue with either the control levers or top link. I had exactly the same issue a few years ago with MF 135 hydraulics, not with the 3pt, though, but with the front loader (powered from the internal pump via a diverter valve) - sometimes fine, sometimes very slow or only lifting a couple of inches. Got all the manuals, advice from a local ferg engineer and was all set to 'operate' when the problem disappeared overnight, and has never come back! Guess I got lucky. By the way, the engineer's guess was something clogging the strainer.

Ok I finally got a chance to look at this a little closer. I opened the cover with the response lever in it, all the inner levers seem to work and move like they should. Then I cranked the tractor and watched as I raised and lowered the implement. No hydraulic fluid spraying any where, so no cylinder issues- yeah. As I raised the implement the hydraulics were jerky and the levers inside were bouncing. So I unhooked the third arm and used a chain to the rear pend in its place. Then I raised the implement and all work exactly as it should, so I have determined that the draft control must be the issue. I will search for some info on adjusting that, anyone have any instruction on this?

If the clevis where the upper link hooks to can move in, and out by hand its loose (which sounds like is your problem) it needs to be adjusted. The master control spring is adjusted by a spanner nut (there is a couple of set screws you need to loosen). It should just tight enough so you can't move the clevis in, and out, but you do not want to any tension on the spring (just tight enough to take any slop out). You do not need to remove the top cover as shown in the photo.

I think that could be the problem, and the info I was looking for. There is not a lot of movement but just a little I will look at that tonight and see if it helps. Thanks for the info.

There is some movement maybe a 1/16" of an inch or less. I will fix that this weekend and see if it makes a difference. From what I have read it should. Guess I will improvise a tool and hopefully it is not stuck to bad, but knowing my luck it will be. Thanks for all the input thus far.

Well I had some time this weekend to work on the old tractor and tightened the spanner nut one round on the upper link and that solved the problem. Hard to believe that tiny bit of movement is all it takes to
make the lift not work properly. Thanks for all the help and input.
