275 3pt lift piston rings question

got my new rings in for the 3pt piston for the 275 figure i might as well replace them while im in there changing the aux pump, anyway the once i got are metal is that correct? the other few tractors i have replaced (not massey) have either been orings or plastic. never seen one of them metal to metal so wondering if it might be common for the cylinder to be wore out instead of just the rings?

the lift still works good just wont hold a load once turn engine off.

MF uses cast iron piston rings, they do offer pistons with the o-ring, and plastic. What diameter is the piston in the lift cylinder, 3 3/8" ?

is one better than the other? if not guess ill just stick with which ever one is in it now, maybe the one with metal rings since that is the one i ordered for.

With the piston ring type, and long as its getting hydraulic pressure it will hold position. When the piston ring seal is good the arms with nothing on them may take a day or two to drop down. If the piston rings have a bad seal it may only hold the arms up for a few seconds. I've worked on several where if the lift arms are all the way up with no weight on them, and shut the engine off the arms would drop all the way down in 10 - 15 seconds. The rings, piston, and cylinder are usually pretty trashed when the lift arms drop all the way down in 10 - 15 seconds.

Once you pull the piston out you'll most likely find the cylinder is scored up. As long as you are getting good lift still then i probably wouldn't worry about it.

checked today with no load on it and it creep down just a little when first turned it off, went off doing something else walked back by 5mins later and it was still 3/4 or more of the way up. so maybe not to badly worn.

Another test for the lift cylinder seals is if you have live pto, and you have a rotary mower (or any 3 point mounted implement that also uses the pto) hooked to the 3 point. Should the mower starts dropping all the way to the ground when you depress the clutch to engage the pto its really time for new seals.
