Massey TO 30 power problem...

Hey there guys...i recently was given TO 30....starts right up but doesn't have any power....I was told it may be a governor issue....were should I start....I rather not shotgun parts at it and also how can i fix the throttle lever that won't stick?

Check the basics first: Plugs good, gapped properly? Cap and rotor and points good, points gapped right? Timing? Spark advancing? How about the carb and fuel filter(s), might be flowing enough to idle but not enough to work.

I have a 135, but I think yours is similar; there's a friction disk under the dash panel that holds the throttle where you put it, this could be gone, broken, worn or glazed - it's just a cork disk between 2 metal ones.

I'd definitely check all of that stuff before digging in to the governor.

There was a 12 volt system installed as well could that have done something to the points...? It did a number in the starter but the starter had been redone a few times....I will start with the easy stuff....is the throttle something I can get parts for ?

If it's just the cork disk that's bad, you should be able to find or make a replacement though I can't recall seeing them for sale specifically.

Power in an IC engine will be limited by restricting fuel flow or restricting airflow or both. When you say "...doesn"t have any power." does that mean you put the tractor under load and it stalls? If so then check the following

Start with the easy part. disconnect the air filter from the carb intake (short hose). DO THIS ONLY IN AN AREA WHERE IT IS NOT DUSTY! Usually the air filter will not be a problem unless you are demanding full power output from the engine( i.e. plowing in heavy soils).

Next make sure you have adequate fuel delivery from the tank outlet to the carb fuel bowl. There is a filter in the sediment bowl a the tank outlet make sure it is not restricted. There is a "secret filter" at the carb inlet fuel elbow. Make sure it is not blocked. Check the fuel line for pinched fuel line.

Poor spark will limit power as will incorrect engine initial timing and a failed centrifugal advance mechanism in the distributor.

Systematically check all these before you consider messing with the governor.
