MF 250 replacing the top-hat seal

I have drained the fluid and am replacing the top hat seal on the break rod and in the lever bracket. I installed the top hat seal in the bracket, replaced the gasket and mounted it on the tractor. I cant get the top hat seal over the first ring to get it seated properly so as not to leak. I tried to get the seal in the bracket after putting on the rod first and it seamed impossible. Is their a special tool or trick to seat the top hat seal after you get the rest of it together. I tried pushing it back with bushings by screwing on the nut but didn't go very far due to worrying about damaging the seal. It reminds me of putting a tire on a rim. trying to get the seal over the bump. It just rotates around at an angle and wont pop over. I can only get one finger in the opening. I read on the ford page I should try vaseline on the rod and I.D. of the seal. I plan on trying that. I Don't have enough strength in my hands to push the seal in the bracket after installing it on the rod. How do I know when I have it seated right? when it is between the two bumps, or molded rings on the break rod i'm guessing. Any Ideas anybody?

Hello,
They can be difficult to fit and you can spend a lot of time chasing them round. You are right it is very similar to fitting a tyre. I find the easiest way is to apply a little grease to the rod and boot. Push the boot ring on one side first and hold it there with a small screwdriver. I have a set of 'pick' tools which are all pointed and bent to a hook, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Using the 45 degree tool it is possible to push the point under the edge of the seal and ease it over the retaining ring on the rod. When fitted make sure that the rubber ring is fully seated on the rod. Doing the last bit is just like fitting a tyre.....a bit of a struggle and then very satisfying when it falls into place.
