Massey Ferguson 10 Transmission

I have a MF 10 that will not shift into gear the belt drive just keeps rolling the transmission. the belts are loose from the tightener. if i manually hold the variable then i can shift into gear and it will work until i pull it back out or try to shift to another gear. is there a brake of some kind in the transmission to stop it from rolling freely?

There is no brake to make shifting easier. Make sure all the belt supports are in place, the belt needs to "grow" out of the engine pulley with the pedal down so the transmission pulley can stop to shift. If the belt supports are missing or not set correctly then shifting is difficult or impossible. When set right shifting is easy.

There are 2 v-belts, part number 515382M1 "V" Belt, Main Drive (45"). The second v-belt part number 515383M1 "V" Belt, Trans-Axle Drive (60"). My guess is someone put a belt on that is a little too short.

replaced both belts and no difference on my shifting. the front belt is tight when the variable lever is in the slowest position and the belt is running flush to the top of the variable. the rear belt is at the bottom of the variable but the belt tightener is keeping the rear belt tight causing the tranny to keep rolling. when i am in this position i cannot release the clutch pedal because the front belt is tight. what am I missing here? I also tried moving the shims around on the rear pulley with no difference. Is there an adjustment on the location of where the variable is to be set? I don't find any belt guides on the tractor but the belts seem to be running straight.

Sounds like you maybe missing something in the linkage, here is diagram from the parts book.

Think I have a 10-12 variable owners book, will look as it had the adjustment settings. I recall sometimes the rear pulley needed shims placed between the pulley halves, on any belt drive belt must "grow" out of either the engine or transmission pulley for shifting. If any belt support stops are missing, or not set right the belt will hang down into the pulley groove, making shifting hard if not impossible. MF dealer I worked for sold few gear drives, most were 7,8,12 Hydro models. Gear models did shift fine when set correctly though..
