'73 MF 175 diff. lock ??

Ok , so read through all the archives on this. I have the pedal freed up and but it will only hit the actuator in axle hsng. and then back the 1/4" the other way but will not push or pull the actual actuator. I can turn the actuator in and out which I assume is the adjustment only. Is it stuck inside ? What will it hurt to press in with hyd porta-power to free up. What exactly is inside hsng and what makes it release when you turn front wheels ? Not really looking forward to tearing axle hsng off to fix this. Probably just do without it if that's what it takes. Thanks , in advance , for any / all advise.

Here's a picture that shows the two differential lock mechanisms for the 175.

Hello, another interesting 'same difference' here. The upper type of diff-lock assembly was only used on square axle
wet brake tractors in the UK from around 1971 onwards. The lower type was used on all round axle 175s to end of
production in 1968 or so. Would not have been possible to have a 175 with the top type.

Hi Dave,
I gotta feeling that Stateside, MF used the "square" type axle housings on MF 175's up to 1975, but used dry brake components in them.
It's feasable that the later type diff lock assembly was used in these housings as well. Just a thought.

Yes, Massey nut is correct about the North American 175's. Later models did have square axles fitted but had dry brake components. These could be converted to wet brakes like the North American 200 series had. I believe the differential lock linkage was different in these from the old round axle housing style.

Well , mine has square axle and is dry brakes and diagram one is exactly what I have and thanks for posting it. Are there any inherent "sticking/setting up" problems with this that I should be aware of ? I jacked it up on rt side and wheel spins so I assume it's stuck in "de activated" position.

Can't say Randy B as our 175 has the round axle with differential lock. It hasn't worked in 15 years or more but doesn't appear to be stuck. Everything moves externally but no lock up. Next time we pull trumpet housing for brakes we are going to check internals and see what is wrong. As you can tell it is not essential for it to be working for us. I am sure someday I will get hung up and wished it was working!

Don't know Randy, ours worked fine when tractor was new and I was a kid. The pedal still moves freely now but there is no activation when pedal is pressed down. We really never used it much and not having it working doesn't handicap us much with what we are doing with the tractor. Now that I said this probably will get stuck tomorrow! Any way the next time we pull the trumpet housing for brakes or other repairs I will investigate further as to why it is not working.
