135 Oil Leak at Tach Line

I had oil leaking from the small hole where the tach line attaches to the engine. I removed the cover and replaced the seal and gasket. Put everything back together and oil is still pouring out of the hole. I assume that means my seal isn't working. Any ideas? I pushed the seal as far back as I could with my fingers. Is there a specific place it needs to be or am I missing something? Thanks!

This seal is somewhat difficult to install without it folding under- sometimes have to "stretch" the seal lips to get it to go over the end of the camshaft without folding under. I've spent lots of time cursing one of these seals. The end of the cam has basically no chamfer, so the seal has no lead in. It is doable- but it's tricky.

Thanks...I had to force it on and then it slid into place. Did I ruin that seal? I'm going to pull it off when I get home and try again.

Hi, obvious question perhaps but have you fitted the seal the correct way? It should be fitted so that the garter spring is visible in the plate and facing forward. If the leads are negligible it should be possible to turn the plate back and forth as you fit it with some grease around the seal lip and camshaft end.
Ensure that the plate is square and it should fit OK.

Thanks for the response! I pulled it apart again last night and didn't see any problems. Put it back together and it's working now. I don't what I did different the second time but it's fixed. It's not easy to get access to remove that cap but I'm a pro at it now!
