MF 65 throttle

Got a gas MF 65. When the throttle is pulled down all the way it stays until the engine RPMs get up to maybe 1,1800. Then the throttle lever would go back up, and the engine would slow to about 1,500 RPMs.

I got up under the dash and tightened the bolts on the friction disks. Now the throttle lever is very stiff, and it will hold at about the PTO RPM mark. But no more.

I'm wondering if the governor needs adjusted. But I have no idea how to go about doing that. Was hoping you guys might have some insight.

I have a permanent fix for that throttle trouble, but it's not in any MF book. The shaft has two tapered teeth that go into the steel disc grooves. Over time it gets play between the to causing the exact problem you have. I remove the oil pressure gauge, remove the two cork friction discs so they don't get burned. With the linkage off the lower end of shaft, set the steel disc on the tension plate with the shaft in place too so it's square as possible. Then through the oil gauge hole I weld the shaft to the plate so it's solid. After it's cooled cut through each cork disc to get them back in place, and re-assemble as needed. Tighten the clamp enough as needed to then hold the throttle. You will then notice there's NO play at all anymore. Over the years I've done several 50, 65, 165, and 175s this way. A bit of work but turns out well..

Thanks, but - It isn't excess play that's the problem. The governor is pushing the throttle lever back towards the idle position.

Look more closely at the steel plate between the cork discs, I'll bet it stays put while the throttle lever moves, then the plate will move due to wear. That's why I weld them solid, to remove all play. Speed will change anytime the throttle lever moves because of the lower attached linkage, but the loose play between the shaft and steel disc won't keep it where you want. More common on gas tractors, but diesels will do it too.
