MF 255 Battery Removal

Just picked up a 1978 MF 255 and the
batteries are dead. I opened the 2 grilles
in the front and noticed neither battery
could fit through either opening. I figure
they've gotta come out of the side panel but
the front end loader is in the way. Does
anyone know if I need to remove the FEL to
get the batteries out or am I missing
something?

If your 255 is like my 265 with a FEL it is not difficult to do, if the batteries are sitting on a trays cross mounted you can loosen the tray side bolts to body and slide the tray and battery down to grill opening. I did this from the grill opening. Also, on my 265 with FEL I changed the battery location to be in the opening under dash. There is ample room there just like they are placed in 100-series. Just unbolt small side panel on left side by shifters and slide in battery. A better location and makes easier maintenance with FEL. Good luck

My MF 255 originally had the two-battery system. Changed it a long time ago to one battery. Just recently had to replace the battery. Remove the side panels (both right-side and left-side panels) and replace. Really tight in there. No FEL to deal with. Maybe you could raise your FEL high enough to gain access. Good luck.
