O compression on one cylinder Continantal Z134

I have recently acquired a 1958 MF 50 its gas so it has the 134 in it , its only running on three cylinders so I did a compress1on check and one cylinder has 0 compression my question is there a way to figure out if its a valve problem or rings without removing the head any advice would be greatly appreciated

A bore light might let you look inside the cylinder.
With zero compression, rings are not likely the problem.
More likely a broken valve or one stuck open, or perhaps
one with a chunk of carbon on the valve seat.
Pull the valve cover and see if all the rocker arms move.

To eliminate the piston rings you can do a wet compression test. Squirt about 4oz or so of engine oil in the cylinder then do a compression test, if the rings are bad the oil will temporarily seal the pistons rings, and you will get a compression reading.

If it were the rings I would think there would be at least a little bit of compression. I'd be looking at the valves as well.

A engine with just seized rings can show no compression, I've seen it many times. You can also wet test the cylinders that have compression, and see if they get more compression. If you see an increase of 10psi, or more on a wet test its time to replace the rings.

I suppose if they were seized. Isn't it ATF or something similar you can try to loosen them up if they're stuck?

I have tried just about every different trick in the book trying to get piston rings in-seized, none worked. It's faster to just pull the engine apart, and rebuild it.

Which is probably what should happen if it's got stuck rings anyways. There's likely to be some other less than desirable things wrong with it.

do a leak down test on it, they make a kit that puts air into the cylinder and it will tell you where you are loosing compression, the one I have puts 100psi in and you need to have that cylinder at top dead center then listen at the intake, exhaust and in the oil fill hole you should hear where you are losing comprssion
