Too much BACKLASH in drive train aft of Transmission:
FE-35 X 6 speed transmission, 3 speed with High and Low: 5000 hrs. operating time:
I installed new brake shoes and noticed there was excessive backlash on the AXEL,Diff, and Coupling Drive with Tractor in 1st gear low range. I removed both CIRCULAR inspection ports on diff. housing and noticed the Coupling between the output shaft of the transmission planetary and the splined input of the pinion was climbing and wobbling. With engine running I noticed the COUPLING was wobbling and trying to climb the internal splines.
After dismantling, the RETINER nut that maintains preload on the bearing of the Pinion was found loose? The retainer nut was still locked in place by the LOCK TAB from 1963.I removed the LOCK TAB and was able to tighten the Lock Nut one turn and was at or close to the recommended pre load of 6-8in.lbs torque.
Pictures of COUPLING on both ends of Coupling:
Has anyone on "YT" seen this or had to deal with this in the past?
Thanks
Bob..
