Massey Ferguson 155

Guys - I have a relative who is about 1200 miles away from me and asked me some questions about his Massey 155. I'm not very familiar with Massey's at all but told him I'd try to help him out over the phone as best I could.

He said that the tractor has a few issues, first being that when he pushes in the clutch it will not stop the tractor from moving, he said it was working and then his son was pulling snow with a 3pt blade this winter and something popped and it no longer will stop. He has to shut the tractor off to stop, I'm assuming maybe a broken clutch fork and not allowing the throw-out bearing to disengage the clutch?

Next issue is the PTO. He said it will not stop when you push the clutch in (this was before the "pop" noise they heard) and also, he uses it on a small square baler and he said when he gets into some heavy windrows it will stop the PTO. I am guessing maybe the two PTO issues are related somehow. He is going to split the tractor it sounds like to see what he can find but was looking for some guidance.

Anyone have any pictures or ideas what to tell him to be looking for, or tips for splitting it?

Thanks guys, I wish he lived closer so I could go help him out but he's a long ways away.

Thanks again.
Chris

Cant find a manual for the 155 specifically but most, but not all, machines have a dual clutch setup. One drives the transmission and the other drives the pto. They share the pressure plate assembly in a two stage fashion. If something poped and is no longer working it makes sense that both drive and pto would be hosed. That machine looks to have multipower standard which is another complication but does sound like a split is in his future. If he takes the inspection plate off the bottom are there any loose parts sitting there?

I talked to him last night and asked him if there was an inspection cover and he said there was, so I advised him to open that up and see what he could see first. He said he was going to split it between the trans and the rear end but I told him it would probably need to be split between the engine and trans if it's a clutch issue, correct statement? Thanks.

Hi, assuming that the tractor has a dual-stage clutch unit there are two additional possibilities if it will not stop. Can't really comment on what might have caused the 'pop'. If there is any sign of oil leakage either from the transmission forward or engine rearwards then there might be a film of oil on the clutch plate/s. This will cause a drag and can be sufficient to 'drive' the tractor forward in the lower gears. The other and more likely possibility is that one side of the main clutch plate lining has broken and fallen down between the flywheel or pressure plate and the clutch plate itself. This in effect will give you two thicknesses of lining on one side of the plate and one on the other with nothing on one side where it has broken away. The clutch pedal will normally feel satisfactory as part of the pressure plate is still being moved. But the tractor will not stop. With the cover removed under the clutch unit and using a flashlight look for the 3 equally spaced PTO plate adjuster screws. The clearance should be roughly equal. If one or two have a very much smaller gap (or no gap) than the others the above problem may be the cause and will require the tractor to be split.
