malleable or cast axles?

On several models for example 1080 MF they show differences for cast or malleable axles. Could you order these tractors either way? Was one better than the other? If it was just a production change why don't
they just list serial number break? Looks like other things changed as well depending upon axle type.

The cast iron axle housings are big, and square, they have to be so they can be strong enough. The malleable iron housings will be smaller, but still very strong. The tractor could have come with ether axle housings. The malleable axle housings will have 4 bolt holes where the fenders bolt on, the cast iron axle housing will have a series of something like four ridges to keep any bolts from sliding. Think of malleable iron as like kneaded bread dough, while cast iron is more like toasted bread.
