Distributor shaft end play

It should have very little, if any, end play. A little is ok but if its excessive it will cause the shaft to bounce at idle.

The Z series Continental had a thrust plate on the cam that can wear and cause axial movement of the cam shaft that can drive the distributor up. Are you breaking rotors?

Exactly, what I am experiencing with 135 at idle, not smooth
but throttle up or put under a load pulling disc plow tractor
runs much better.

The shaft for the rotor is held down to the lower driveshaft in the distributor by the advance weight springs. When you lift up on the rotor shaft does it feel like something is pulling it back (like a spring). Sounds like you may have a problem with the advance weight mechanism underneath the plate the points attach to.
