Hydraulic lift cylinder and piston

Hi,
I have a 175 tractor that has a scored lift cylinder (3-3/8" bore) that I need to replace. My question is; can I replace the original three ring lift piston with one that has packing style seals? if so then does anyone know the part numbers?
Thanks

Just keep in mind that cylinder has a beveled nose on it. Putting in the teflon ring setup is no easy task with that bevel. There was another post series recently of someone trying to do the same.

Okay thanks. I thought the piston with the teflon ring might wear better and seal better. Or would it be better to replace it with the more
common cast ring piston?

Teflon is pretty tough (I used to fabricate some parts out of it). The good thing about the Teflon seal is that it doesn't have a gap like a cast iron does, as the cast iron wears the gap bets bigger. Bigger gap = leaks more, another plus is Teflon isn't brittle like cast iron (you could break the cast iron rings putting them in, and not know it), use the Teflon, and take your time to put together. You can round/taper the edge of the cylinder a little bit with some sand paper to help make it go in easier.

Teflon can be good stuff no doubt. Someone else pointed out to me once that the original ring design lasted for how many decades? So far i have been happy with the teflon one i put in mine.
If you do go with the teflon ring you'll have to let us know how you solved getting it into the bevel area. Most likely a small screwdriver and lots of patients but curious to know what method worked for you. Someone else mentioned cutting a beer can shim to extend the ring compressor but dont know if it worked or not.

Beer can shim worked just fine. Stainless shim stock would be better, I bought the cheapest thing. Put the overlap of the ring compressor to the bevel side. Use the compressor upside down so you can get the edge of it into the cylinder. Lots of Hyd fluid. Use a wooden dowel or plastic hammer inside piston. Make sure the piston is not deformed, the one I bought had been dropped or something.
By the way the original Massey fix was to mill the lower ring groove to accept a 1/4" O-ring instead of the metal ring.
I did not have access to a lathe so I went with the new style.

Hi,
Finally got a chance to install the Teflon ring on the piston. What worked for me was to heat the ring up in hot water then carefully stretch it with my two hands. It took about 5 minutes with pretty good force and some patience. I kept putting force on it and rotating it to different positions in my hand while checking it periodically for fit. Finally it was large enough to slide easily over the piston. After a bit; it started shrinking back some. I gave it a little help by carefully putting a ring compressor around it. It still fit a little loose so I left it until morning. By morning it was shrunk back to a snug fit. At that point it installed pretty easily in the cylinder. Just my two cents on how it worked for me.
