I just picked up a MF40 Industrial with me engine rebuild
(3hrs). This is my first tractor and I purchased it to be able to
clear parts of my property. I am experiencing loss of power
going up steep 45 degree hill. Meaning that with full throttle
the tractor came to a stop on the hill while in high rpm. The
engine was slightly labored and rpms were high, but no
movement. I have a hydrostatic clutch with instant reverse. I
tried both high and low gear with no success. I recently had
to rebuild the hydraulic lift cover and replaced the hydraulic/
transmission fluid in the tractor since the previous fluid was
contaminated by water. After refilling the tractor with fresh
fluid I noticed that the new fluid was discolored and realized
that I did not drain the transmission case. I figure there was
not much of the old fluid in there since I drained 10 gallons of
old fluid. Could some residual fluid cause loss of power? In a
previous post I noticed after turning the tractor around the
tractor seemed to be slowing down faster when gas pedal is
depressed. Thinking the brakes were locking up and that
drive axle fluid may be low I removed drive axle plugs and
noticed black fluid and burnt smell on back of drive axle fluid
plugs. Could no or low fluid in drive axle's prevent the tractor
to climb a hill? After refilling drive axles with fluid the tractor
seemed to drive much better without resistance on a flat
surface, however it seems that it still lacks power to climb a
hill or push a small tree over with the front loader. I have not
tested the tractor on a hill again since I don't have much
confidence in the brakes until I adjust them. Is there a
transmission filter on this tractor? I can not seem to find one
in the parts list.
Should I drain and replace the hydraulic/transmission fluid?
Is there something wrong with my hydrostatic clutch?
