230 Axle Pivot Replacement

Good morning to you all hope all is well. Can someone please tell me how the heck to get the front axle pivot pin out of a 230 with the swept back frontend please? My manual shows that it has a snap ring on the front and back of it. I've cleaned it real good and took a small pick and went around the pin to get the gunk out of there and I don't see any snap rings anywhere but when I hit it with a block and hammer you can tell something is holding it. I removed the wedge pin with the nut so its not that. When I move the assembly around it appears that the bushings are worn and the pin moves around so it's not in a bind but something has it and I don't want to break something. This is on the 230 I'm rebuilding the engine on and have asked for your help on that and I really appreciate the time that you guys take to share your knowledge with others. Thanks.

Do you have the swept or semi-swept axle? The swept axle has the bushing in the center beam while the semi-swept has two bushings in the support assembly.
The swept axle has the pin pressed into the support assembly and is a bugger to get out without removing the assembly. The pin should not be moving at all in the support assembly with this type. If it is then things are badly worn and should just fall out basically.
From your description though it sounds like you might have the semi-swept version which is mostly straight.

Thanks rockepg. It must be the semi-swept because it has a bushing in the front and the back and is mostly straight and square. The manual shows 4 different ones and the odd thing is the one it says is in the 230 isn't what mine looks like. Anyway the one that is in mine shows snap rings but there aren't any that I can see anywhere. I might try and hit it harder.

Ok that is the semi-swept then. I assume you can move the axle front and back a little in the bushings but just can't get the pin out of the beam? The kind with the wedge and bolt should not have any snap rings that i remember, been a while though. There was a kind that used snap rings and no bolt and wedge but can't remember where that one was used. If memory serves the pin needs to be driven out of the axle beam but maybe one of the other guys can chime in on this.

Since you removed the nut, and the wedge pin you have the semi-swept back axle. Those usually get pretty stuck, I just cut the pin behind, and in-front of the axle with a torch to get the axle out. The pin is usually worn where it rides in the bushings so it needs replacing anyways, then I carefully cut the pin out of the axle with a torch. I never had one where a press could push the pin out of the axle.
