MH44 3PTH Mod

I modified a MH44 to have a 3PTH, disc brakes, and a live PTO. (MH didn't offer a 3PTH with the 44 model.) To install the disc brakes and live PTO,
I had to drill out the transmission casting, and change a bunch of other stuff to make it work. The special top link was made from a Cat 1 draw bar
and 1" threaded rod.

Wow, you went to a lot of work, ever think about getting a late model casting?

Nice idea on the center link.

What you have there is called the "plow hitch". When you bought a mounted plow for a 44 that came with it. The top link fit right under the pto. If you used it with a mower (etc) you had to watch or the top link would hit the pto shaft when you raised it up.

There weren't that many MH 44's around this neck of the woods to find what I needed. I had a junk MH 33 with the 3PTH, disc brakes and live PTO to use for the conversion. Putting that equipment on the MH 44 involved: drilling two 2 5/16" diameter holes in the casting for the disc brake linkage, and swapping ring & pinion gears, bull pinion brake shafts, and the gear shift lever. It always puzzled me why MH never offered a 3 PTH for the popular model 44, but they did for the model 33 and model 44 Special.

I've seen several 44s with the same three point option. Have a 33 diesel that has it too. I'd rather have the Bendix brakes that don't have the slipping LPTO option, long as it's not needed. Dad got mad at his 33 years ago when the LPTO diff clutch slipped, drilled a hole and tapped in a 5/16 bolt, no more slipping after that. We didn't use it anyway..

I bought a 3 pt for my MH44, it is a category 2, do not know what it came off off, but bolted up.

You probably have the heavier three point like is on my 33D that MH used. If you look close in the photo that's the lighter three point assembly that's attached to the cultivator rockshaft, with the plain smaller 22, 33, and 44 cylinder. The Special had the larger cylinder with quadrant like the 333 and 444 used with the follow up linkage.

I find the LPTO handy when I'm bush hogging in fields with spotty high grass sections. If one replaced the springs in the LPTO assy with stiffer ones, I suppose the slipping problem could be eliminated. I wonder if there are stiffer springs out there.
FYI Dieseltech, I also have a 33 diesel that I restored a few years back. You gave me helpful advise regarding the timing of the injection pump. Photo's above.

Nice 33D engine pic. The trick I used on my 33D LPTO clutch when it slipped a bit at a plow day last spring, with the assembly apart and cleaned up on the bench, use a lathe and cut 1/32 inch off all the spacers to get them to 1 inch long. That will compress all the heavy springs more, now mine holds fine after that was done.
