Transmission pan leak

Massey135

I noticed a small fluid leak at the 4 bolt bottom plate on my Massey 135 (1966). Perma Tex was recommended by a friend, who has had good experience using it as a gasket sealer. At the same time, I will be doing a 'needed' transmission fluid change. Any recommendations on new fluid type replacement and Perma Tex vs gasket would be appreciated. My Massey is a GAS Continental Z-145 engine and appears to be in very good shape.

That 4 bolt plate gives you access to adjust the clutch, it doesn't need to be sealed (its better if it isn't sealed). Further back from the plate there should be hole with a cotter pin in it, the cotter pin is allowed to rotate to keep the hold clear to keep the bell housing from filling with oil should the engine, or transmission develop a bad leak. Some of the newer MF's have a hole drilled in the 4 bolt clutch access plate with a cotter pin to help keep the hole open so any oil can get out.

What color is the fluid leaking out? Black or a tan/red'ish color? Like ptfarmer said there is no reason to seal that gasket. Purpose of that gasket is to just keep the dust out and since you'll be in there several times over the clutches life you dont want to be messing with sealed gasket.
Some people will go so far as to drill another hole in front of the cover through the transmission case and install another cotter pin. This should divert any engine oil out the bottom and keep it away from the clutch.
