Massey Ferguson Industrial 40 Power Steering

Hi again everyone! I just finished putting a pto in my non-pto instant reverse Industrial 40 with the help of everyone here, especially Gary F. It works great and I am have used it to bushhog my property with no problems. Thanks again for the help and if I can be of assistance to anyone else converting to pto, please let me know.

Now my question. My power steering on my tractor has some issues. It steers fine about a quarter of the time, but the other times it is like it is freewheeling and I can spin the wheel and the front tires move just a bit and I have to keep steering a lot to get the tires to move. I have bled out the system multiple times and replaced the filter in the pump which is the large circular canister type. It will not hold the turn and if I keep the steering wheel in a turn, the tires return to straight ahead. I was told that this is either a steering valve or power steering pump issue, but as they are both very expensive, I am trying to figure out which way to go. Any idea? Does anyone know where to get a power steering pump rebuild kit for this machine? Any help would be appreciated as this is very annoying.

Perhaps you need to rebuild the steering cylinders. Does it steer any better with the wheels off the ground? If so and you can keep spinning the wheel after they get to full left or right lock then they are most likely the problem. You might find the pump on this site or get one from a dealer. Also, I have found it takes a long time with lots of back and forth from lock to lock (without activating the relief valve), to bleed all the air from the system. Perhaps 30 minutes or more. Low oil and air in the system was the problem when our's had those symptoms. I've had the steering valve on ours apart to change some seals and would say it isn't too likely that it would be your problem and unless it's leaking I'd leave it alone. They are pretty simple and not much can break inside there. Best of luck, MK

Glad to hear your PTO installation went well. Many on this website have given me help in the past particularily Big Dean.
Sounds like you have the 3 posibilities nailed down cylinders, pump, valve.
The procedure for testing each involves some fabrication involving test guages and is NOT in the MF40 manual.
There are however some diagrams and views of the different pumps, control valve and cylinders.
One question can you hear the relief valve or do you see oil foaming inside the reservoir when you turn?

Thanks for the responses. Good to hear from you again Gary.

I ordered a power steering pump kit on this site and received it the next day. Thanks.

Hello, I am finishing an overhaul of an MF-40 Industrial w/backhoe/loader. It does not have a PTO. I'd like to put one on it if I can find the parts reasonably cheap. Might you know where I can find the parts? Thanks, J

Oh, also, I am looking for one of the standard open canopies for an MF-40 Industrial tractor; This one didn't have one on it when I bought it. Thanks!

I saw your post about the 40 steering problem. I also have a problem with my steering. I took the cylinder off the left side and put in new ruber on the shaft. Assembleded it together and now when the wheels are on the ground the steering wheel turns and turns with little movement of the wheels left or right. When the wheels are off the ground and I turn the steering wheel, it will turn the wheels all the way to the left and stops. When I turn it to the right, the steering wheel just keeps turning. I have taken the cap off the resovier and turned the steering right both left and right 40-50 times with no improvement. Do you have any thoughts??? My tractor is also a 40. :(

I am having the same problems with my MF40. Just replaced the power steering pump with no success. What did you do to fix the problem? Also I am interested in adding a PTO to mine. How much did it cost to add the PTO?

Thank you
