Model F-40 PTO and 3 point not working

I'm looking at purchasing a Massey Ferguson 40 potentially for.use as a brush hog machine.

I went and looked at it this evening and the story I got was that the tractor was being used to till this spring and the PTO and the 3 point hitch quit working.

Any ideas on where to start? Trying to decide if it's worth me purchasing for $800 or not, thoughts?

MODEL; F-40

Agreed.. Sounds like something happened to the pto disk in the clutch. Did they say it happened all of the sudden or slowly got worse over time?

They said it happened.all the sudden, they
made one run in the garden with the tiller
and it stopped. I was thinking the clutch
may be out of adjustment as well. On this
model does it have it's own PTO disc/plate
? Do I split the trailer for at the
bellhousing to get to it or back in the
axle?

Okay thanks, anyone have a parts diagram for this tractor by chance? WHat are your thoughts on the $800 price tag? Tractor looks pretty darn clean all things considered, it is not a rust bucket. Im thinking about $100 for a clutch plate, plus my labor, if thats the problem right? How would that keep the 3 point from rising though, or is that a whole other problem?

Thanks for the input

The pto shaft turns the hydraulic pump as well as turn the pto output. If there is no input via the clutch then neither system will work.
A new clutch kit is most likely going to run you 2-300 bucks. If this is the only thing wrong with it then 800 is good deal.

Got the tractor home tonight and started inspecting things, oil is leaking slot from the clutch inspection plate, I suspect the rear main seal I out on the engine. Also the plate held the remnants of the PTO clutch. Gonna split it tomorrow and order the PTO disc and rear main seal tonight... Hopefully it goes smoothly!

Can I not just replace the PTO disc in the two stage clutch and put it all back together? I'm finding those disc for about $100.

Technically you could do just the pto disk. However once you get into the clutch you'll most likely find other issues. Shrapnel could have taken out a spring or two, bearing(s) could be shot etc. Best to just put in the whole kit and be done with it.
What color is the fluid dripping? Black or tan'ish?

Yes it could have and I won't know till I
split it, but the tractor has not run a fu
hr since the disc failure so maybe nothing
else got damaged. Fluid dripping is more
black than it is tan, plus the owner said
he would have to add engine oil once a
summer (he didn't use it much) I suspect
the oil broke down both friction disc (PTO
and trans) and that I might end up
replacing them both while I'm in there.

Quite possible. Take a good look at the oil pan gasket too. They tend to leak more often than the rear main seal does and give the same effect on the clutch.
