Massey 65 Perkins rear main

Ok, bought tractor with bad clutch. Replaced clutch, did rear main seal while I had tractor split... Old clutch was soaked in oil.
Put new seals in, followed directions..
Did not trim was able to work both halves completely into the grooves leaving them very slightly "proud" so that they bolted together completely flush... Reassemble and fired up
Drip drip drip, WTF!!
Gonna put in new oil pan gasket now before I split this damn thing again. The plugs on the back of block were clean no oil... I'm at a loss.

What color is the dripping oil? Diesel engine will be black, rear end oil is usually a light tan color. Remove the lower inspection plate and see if oil is being thrown from the clutch assembly with the engine running. If so it's likely rear end oil, make sure you have a face shield on..

Assuming this is a diesel..
May sound really odvious but when you bolted the split housing back together and back onto the block did you remember to put new the gaskets between the housing and the block? Also did you put a dab of rtv between the housing halfs before bolting them together?

Did you soak the rope seals in oil before installing them? Some require soaking to swell the rope. If not, it may stop leaking when the seals swell.

Hard to say.. You compress them pretty good to install so not sure it'll absorb anything more. I would try the pan seal before you split the tractor again though. Not at all uncommon for that real seal to leak.

Rope seals are a pain they seem to leak some no matter what. When it drips does it drip once a minute, once an hour, every 5 seconds? On tractors that have the rope seal I drill a hole in the bell housing so if the rear seal leaks it will drain, and not hold oil (see red dot in picture).

Well, looks like I'm gonna go ahead and split it again. I'm gonna put a new main seal in and drop the oil pan for gaskets, gonna replace the gallery plugs I think. I think I'm gonna go ahead and drop the main caps as well and do the main bearings and thrust washers as well...
Hopefully this will solve the leak.
