MF 590 hyd pump noisy

Hi, Is it normal for these pumps to be a bit "knocky"? Mine seems to be a bit loud after a few hours of work. Is it a feature of the tractor or did I need to think about replacing sooner rather than later?

Thanks for that.....very informative pictures!

I guess its a question of how much noise is too much

I read the service manual and it seemed to suggest the pump can be removed by taking off the hydraulic cover, now I see your report and it seems it has to be split in 2 parts

Hello James,
Yes, it is a phenomenon of the Ferguson pump that it will rattle (and knock), some more than others. However as a precaution it would be worth removing the pump dowels. These are the two small oval plates mounted on the outside of the centre housing and retain the pump in position internally. Remove one at a time to check that the dowels are not broken. Also that the pump plate that they locate in is not broken also. This can be seen through the dowel hole. If one or both dowels were broken the pump will try to turn and bang against the wall of the centre housing quite merrily. If the dowels are OK and the noise is still a worry then there is nothing short of removing the lift cover and inspecting/overhauling the pump/s etc. On the 500 series there is more work involved with the flooring and cab cross-beam etc.

Yes. I share the opinion David wrote, but I think knocking can mean that adjustment is a bit wrong too.

Probably the manual is right. That 565 has option for both 1000 and 540 rpm power take-off. For this reason there are gears in the back that prevented to get pump out without splitting the tractor.

Thanks David. Some gems of information there! I will check out the dowels.

So just to be clear, the pump will come out thru the top cover or I have to split the tractor? (its an 8speed with live PTO and single pump)

the other thing I have noticed is that sometimes it will not lift. I have to push the lever to the downwards position, then to the up position.

Any clues?

If you have the service (workshop) manual and it says that the pump comes out that way, then it comes.

Looks like something moves sticky in the control system. This leads to knocking too, cause the system doesn't know the position of link arms. The eccentric on links cross shaft telling the position moves exactly the same part as the lever.
