New power steering pump probs MF202

My old pump was leaking at the seal before the drive gear. I just went the easy route and bought a new pump. I removed and reinstalled that old pump very easy when I put a new O ring under the leaking reservoir.

But, this new pump was a real bear. The pump was so tight that I had to grab that gear with my whole fist to turn it. I poured some oil into the reservoir and used a socket to turn the pump to try to make it turn easier. Not much luck. This pump had a larger diameter reservoir on it, so I knew that would give me problems. When trying to install the pump the reservoir kept hitting the distributor. But the real problem was that tight gear. It needs to turn to slip into the cam gear and it didn't want to do that. I kept pulling it out and turning the gear a little bit but it just didn't want to slide into that cam gear. I thought I was going to have to pull the distributor out to make the job a little easier. So I went to pull the pump back out and it was stuck. I thought "oh crap".

I got a little rough and it moved a bit and all of a sudden it went into the hole. You might guess it would go into the hole when I was trying to get it out.

The job probably would have been a lot easier if I had pulled the distributor out. I put a new distributor in my 8N but I just didn't want to mess with this one.

Anyway, I finally got the pump installed.

I don't know why they made those reservoirs larger than the stock pumps. It sure makes the job a PIA.

The older style Barnes pumps had a larger reservoir on them, the new one was probably modeled after that style. In my repair manual it states that removal of the distributor is required (or at least recommended) for the older style pumps to gain the clearance needed.

Does that new pump work well? I'm still trying to figure out a way to repair the groove in my pump shaft. Nobody makes a speedi-sleeve that small. I'd rather not spend that kind of money on a new pump.

Glad to hear you got it fixed!
