Massey Harris I-162 wont stay running

Hey all,

Found a problem last week with Bessy (that's her name) where fuel was not entering into the sediment bowl. Luckily,
Tractor Supply Co. sells sediment bowls for Massey Ferguson which was compatible with Massey Harris. Fuel now
flows to the carburetor, but I cannot get her to turn over unless I use starting fluid. She will stay running as long as I
keep spraying starting fluid in the carb. Not sure if I should replace the carburetor at this point, or rebuild it. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated. For images, please go to http://s345.photobucket.com/user/iceman214406/library/

There should be a plug on the bottom of the fuel bowl. While holding a glass jar under the carb unscrew the plug. You should get steady stream of fuel flowing out. Check and see.

Rockepg,

When I do this, if I get fuel flow, what will that point towards? What if I do not? I am asking because I only get to play
with her on the weekends to I want to have a good diagnostics plan. Thank you

If you get good flow from the drain then you are getting fuel to the carb but its not getting through the carb for whatever reason. Stuck float, all gummed up etc.. If you are not getting fuel from the bowl drain then the problem is between the tank and the carb.
When you pull the plug you should have a good steady stream of fuel and it should fill the jar fairly quick.
On a side note, you did turn the shutoff valve on when you installed the new strainer assembly right?
Are you running a hard line between the strainer and carb or a rubber line? A rubber line likes to swell over time and choke the flow.

Thank you makes sense.

Yeah I did turn the fuel on from the sediment bowl (that was actually the first thing I checked).

It is a hard fuel line. I took it off and blew it out with the air compressor just to make sure nothing was in it.

I was looking on tractor supply's website, looks like they have the rebuild kits in store for the Marvel Shraver carbs. I am
going to check the flow on Wednesday, then remove the carb and make sure it is not gummed up somewhere.

There should be a 90 degree brass fitting that screws into the carb that the metal fuel line screws into. Usually that 90 degree brass fitting has a cone shaped screen to keep any trash out of the carb. You may want to look at that.

Looks like this area is where the fuel is stopping. I pulled the plug on the bottom of the carb and very little was coming out. I took off the fuel line at the carb and
opened the valve on the sediment bowl and I have nice flow. I have not removed that 90-degree inlet... Figured I would just do a rebuild kit since this carb has never
been serviced... just need to find the right rebuild kit - I think tractor supply has them, but not sure.

It could be a Zenith carb (this is as big as I could get the picture without too much distortion).

You'll probably have to pull the carb off to get the type. Murphy's law states the info will be on the block side of the carb :)

Attached is the carb that I pulled off. There is a very faint steel label that states TSX-592. I am assuming that is a Marvel p/n

It's the Marvel/Schebler, the TSX-592 number is correct, and is pretty similar to the M/S TSX9475SL, TSX884, TSX893, TSX695 so the carb kits for it are easy to find.
