Massey 22.....hard to start....running bad when hot

Hard starting..new wires, plugs, points, condenser, coil, distributor, carb kit. Set valves and ign.timing by the book. Fuel system clean including tank. Any comments? Compression is a bit weird though. 100,...85....100...85. In that order....also noticed crank pulley moves some before ign. Rotor moves. Worn dist. Drive gear???. Or does that even matter as long as timing is set to suit?

Did you set your valve lash when the engine was hot? Those compression values seem suspect. Also pull that distributor and check for wear. If the pulley moves before the distributor then something is definitely not right.

hard to set valves with engine still hot as time goes while you're getting to the adjustments. Did the best I could and did have distributor out. All in good condition but I do suspect the gear below which also drives the oil pump to be worn. Next step I will remove the oil pan and the oil pump to see what's going on there. Still may have a bad valve or two to deal with....tks.

Ah yes. So to do the valve lash you need to setup a temp gas tank. Like an IV bottle if you will to get the engine hot. Then set the lash as required.
If the distributor is good then something in the cam timing is way off. Worn gears etc. You might be able to see when you pull the pan but most likely you'll have to pull the timing cover. When it does run, you dont get any loud clicking or poping do you?

Won't need a nurse tank, that's a flathead engine. I'd check the distributor advance weight assembly, if it sticks and does not move with speed the engine will run poorly. Setting the valves is fun too, using three wrenches. On my 30 the advance unit was stuck, runs fine after freeing it up. Those engines had both cast and steel cams and oil pump gears, and they must not be mixed.

I am with Dieseltech sounds like advance weights and springs in distributor need attention with those items bad timing will not advance when you thottle up.Scott

Agree 110%, had a 22 do that to me then I bought an 81 with the big old distributor. Same thing, it about has to be the advance weights in the distributor
