timing cover

Ok guys i got a new used timing cover for my z145. Old one took a shot and is dented with a through crack in it. The replacement one got here but something doesn't look right. Not being an expert on governors i need an opinion. The old cover has the adjuster tab pushed down with the adjuster screw all the way out while the new one is pretty much straight out. Also the old one has the lever assembly pretty snug in the unit while the new one has a huge gap and moves in and out. Which one is right?

You need to make sure the bumper spring lever is right behind the governor lever so it can work if needed. Normally the screw can stay backed out on a correctly working governor.

It is right behind the lever on both. Notice the default height difference between them though.
Is that shaft supposed to stick out like that? It moves in and out the full distance. Reason is the inner bearing is flush with the case while the old one it sticks in a little taking up that distance.
The new one also does not have the access plug to drive out the pin so the shaft can be removed and the seal replaced.

Ok i see why the new one has so much slop in the shaft. The locating pin must have sheard off and has allowed the inner bearing to work itself in causing the movement. Easy enough to fix. Big question is the difference in the spring tabs. Both look to be factory formed but are radically different.

On a side note i got a new governor and it came with some kind of big shim. Does that go between the cam gear and race?

The replacement governor weight assembly fits both the three cylinder Perkins and the Continental four. If I recall the shim is for the Continental engine, shim goes in first, then the weight unit. On any Continental, DON'T push the cam gear in place with the cam nut, threaded end could break off. Remember seeing that in a bulletin..

The threaded end of the camshaft will delicate, the MF shop manual for Z145 says to carefully torque the camshaft nut to 70-80 ft lbs. The MF shop manual also warns about over tightening the camshaft nut.

Yes saw the mention in the manual of not using the nut to pull the gear on. Good reinforcement not to do it.
Any thoughts on that spring lever and which one is right? If a properly adjusted setup needs no tension and the screw is backed all the way out then i assume the original spring position is correct. The new one looks like it would be against the governor even with the screw out. I did notice the screw on the new one goes right into the side of the spring instead of under it.
Maybe i should just send it back and weld up my old one instead..
