'64 2135 voltage regulator location?

This tractor has a FEL which I think is a model 100, and a Perkins 3 cylinder diesel. The frame of the loader gets in the way of working on some things, including topping up the engine oil.
The battery's not charging (hasn't been since I bought it) but being diesel I only need it for starting so just have been charging it up occasionally. I'd like to get the system working properly though.
I bought the service manual - which has so electrical section. However I also have a '58 TO-35 and expect it will be similar enough that I can figure it out.
Question is - where is the correct place for the regulator to be mounted? It is presently kind of hanging off the right side in an awkward spot near the loader frame that must be wrong.
Also - anyone know if the regulator is the same as the 35? That would be handy as I have a spare already.
Thanks.

Ah thanks. A very different place than where it is now.
It looks like the regulator from a 35, physically at least.

Was visiting the tractor again today and looked in that spot; it can't go there as the configuration is all different for diesel; there are a couple of fuel filters right there.

Here is what the PO has done:

The regulator is poorly mounted; the wires are crushed up against whatever is behind them, and it doesn't look much like the regulator I see listed in parts places as correct for this model.

Now, I have come across this diagram in a manual for a 135:

So I looked in that location (item 9 in the diagram is the regulator) on my 2135, but I saw this:

So, you can see that it's different from the diagram. For one, the steering column section is much thicker on mine, I guess due to the power steering.
So - where does the regulator really belong? And does anyone know if it's the same as the one on a TO35?

Secondary question, out of curiosity - what might the vertical slit on the right side of the lower dash area be for?
Thanks,

The little vertical split would be for the multi-power shift lever if the transmission had multi-power. For the diesel it looks like it should go where I put the red arrow pointing to.
