135 diesel, smoking and miss fire

Just overhauled my 152 engine. Smoked and miss fired a little. Cracking the injectors, # 3 made no change in running. # 1-2 when cracked
caused it to misfire. I replace #3 injector with a new injector, no difference. No blow by of any kind but lots of grayish smoke and smells of fuel?
Any ideas? Dick

Sounds like low compression heat on #3, not burning the fuel. I'd do a compression check. Are all three pistons the same compression height and bowl size? Makes a huge difference on diesel engines..

Hi, thinking sideways from Dieseltech's comments; Is there any possibility that you have installed the number 3 piston with the torroidal cavity in the crown of the piston away from the main pump side? This would cause poor combustion in number 3.

May seem plainly odvious but did you double check your valve lash? Not holding a valve open by chance is it?

is everything timed up correctly?
are valve clearance correct?
did you overhaul head because I remember hearing a story about a 135 with a misfire which took some sorting but the problem was a broken valve spring
I have just remembered that 135's are sometimes prone to dropped liners but that should not affect yours after fitting new liners

Were the Pistons replaced? Proper orientation of # 3 piston on Conn. Rod? Proper orientation of Conn. Rod Piston assembly?

New liners and Pistons. Pretty sure pistons and rods are installed properly ? I'll pull valve cover tomorrow and check the valve adjustment and check the springs. We did a valve job and used new valves. After that Iwill have to pull. The head I guess 😬. You never know what a Senior moment might have done. Would the timing cause # 3 to not fire

You could take the number 3 injector, and swap it with the number 1, or number 2 injector, and see if the problem goes to whatever cylinder you put the number 3 injector in before yanking the head

Was Injector serviced / supplied by a Diesel Shop...eg. checked as per specs?
