L PTO slips on Massey 44 Special

At plow day this year, the clutch on my 44 special slipped when the Plowing got
tough. It is properly adjusted as in the manual. I have heard that this problem can
be solved by drilling through the side plate and inserting a bolt. While this
disables the 'live' pto, to me that does not matter since it is not used. Any
specific spot to drill this hole? Should it be tapped? Is it easier to do with the
right rear wheel off?
Thanks, Ben

My MH 33 diesel did the same thing, I removed and cleaned the discs and the rust from the plates. Also put each outer spacer in the lathe and cut 1/32 off each one making them one inch long. That will increase the total disc pressure enough in most cases. Dad's 33 gas slipped like that years ago, he just drilled the pack for a 5/16 bolt. First time it tried to slip it locked tight and stayed that way as we never used it. My 33 had no oil on the discs, just rusty. Oil will make them slip though.

Father in laws 44 Special did that too. There was enough wear that the seals were letting oil into the clutch but he couldn't find the part needed for his price and couldn't be sure there wasn't something else wrong too.He got a really good deal on a complete transmission/differential assembly and swapped. It was a straight forward process but lots of heavy lifting.I think bolting the clutch up solid would have been an easier fix. That tractor never did much work for him.He bought it because he always wanted one not because he needed it but it ran too hot to use hard probably due to the hydraulic tank being in front of the rad.I used to drive a 30 with hydraulics for a farm I worked on as a teen.It didn't take much to boil it either.
