Rebuild V turned

Many years ago I was rebuilding the engine on a Chevy Luv pickup. I picked it up cheap with a rod knock. My buddies dad was a heavy equipment mechanic. When I told him I was taking the crank to have it turned, he told me to give it to him and he would have it rebuilt to factory specs. The way he explained it, the journals were welded up and then reground to factory specs. I thought he said there was a machine that kind of sprayed molten metal on the journal. What ever the process, I used the rebuilt crank and never had a problem. As I recall it was cheaper to rebuild the one journal than turn the whole crank. Is this process still used? Is one way better than the other, Thanks, Joe.

You can still have a machine shop weld a specific journal and cut it down. It really depends on the rest of the journals as to whether it's worth it or not. Most of the time the others need to be cut as well.

Thanks, kinda of thought that. The old Chevy crank looked great except the one spun rod journal. Charlie took it to work Monday and brought it home on Wednesday. It was a quick turnaround, Joe.
