Getting Started

Well this weekend I'll get started on the 230 diesel rebuild. I'm taking the crank and one rod to the machine shop Saturday. When they get done so I know what size bearings to get I'll order my rebuild kit. I'm going to take the block and pistons to them to change out the liners, pistons and wrist pins. I'll probably be asking a lot of questions until I get it done so please bear with me and know all of your help is greatly appreciated. My dad was a retired diesel mechanic for Schering Plough and he was a mechanic his whole life but he passed away 9 years ago. He was always my go to for mechanic questions. He'd be tickled to see me rebuilding this by myself.

The machine shop may be able to get the bearings for you. If they can its good idea to have them do it. Avoids the wrong size on accident plus they can't come back and say you got the wrong ones if one decides to spin on ya. Also pick up some plasti-gauge from any auto parts store and do your own verifications when installing the mains and rods. Real easy to do and good piece of mind.

Thanks I wouldn't have thought to take all of them. This is the advice I need and very much appreciate. With all of the knowledge on this site a person can do just about anything. Wonderful site and wonderful people!

(quoted from post at 10:55:00 01/26/17) Take all your rods with you. They will all need to be re-sized.
Take the writst pins too. If the small ends need to be bushed they'll need the new pins to properly clearence them.
