135 engine pan gasket question

I just finished putting my AD3 152 engine together. I need to put the pan back on. Can I silicone the font and rear existing seals or should I replace them with the new cork seale I received with the pan gasket set? Also what wt oil should I put in it. Thanks, Dick

Back when i did a lot of car and truck engine rebuilds i would always tell people to run the first 3k on dino oil then switch to synthetic for the long run. Would some similar schedule apply with tractor motors or is there some aversion to synthetic in general with these old girls?
X3 on using the seals..

After the first 250 hours on the engine the engine should be all broken in by then. I don't think you get your money's worth using synthetic. Any good clean oil is better than dirty, or no oil.

Hi Dick, definately replace the seals. The cork will harden over time and quite frequently causes an oil leak from the rear area of the engine. It is difficult to ascertain whether it is from the sump gasket or from the rear crank seal. Do the sump now and you can rule that out if you should have a future leak. Fit the main section of the cork strip dry into the housing using a small flat screwdriver. Apply silicon around the ends of the cork. You may have to hold them in place for a while. When seated apply more around the ends and ensure that you raise the sump squarely until you can fit a bolt in each corner. Tighten the sump up evenly.
