1080 massey wont start.

question on this tractor could be an obvious... but here goes... if the fuel lift pump is bad can you start the tractor...its been sitting for 12 months now.. it barrs over with starter... no smoke at exhaust... i'm beinging to think its root of problem.. plugged in block heater too... and put double dose of diesel fule antifreeze in tanks....i do get fuel at filters when manually pumping the booster pump...hoping its not the injector pump.

Did the tractor sit for a long time? Did you change the filters recently? If the lift pump is toast then it wont start. Did you try bleeding the air from the system yet?

yes did that at the filters....and no fuel up to injector pump.....its has been below freezing here sub...it pushes fuel to the filters it seems nothing further... if diaphrams dons then it dumps fuel in the engine sump right.

If the diaphragm is torn you could end up with fuel in the sump sure. Usually, at least in my experience, if a pump like this goes out it's the return spring inside that breaks or gets very weak. The diaphragm doesn't get returned to relaxed position and the pump arm pushes on air. Pretty easy to tell if you take it off and put in a vise and pump it manually.
You say you get fuel up to the filters but nothing past or did i read that wrong? Another thing to check is look in the tank and make sure dome debris didn't make its way in there and block the hole. Leaf is a perfect example.

Is this something new that happened all of the sudden? Had any issues with it before this?

If you have a spare then its worth a shot. Did you by chance loosen the line going into the injector pump and see if any fuel squirts out when you crank it? Don't take it off as you dont want the injector pump to lose prime or anything.

also booster pump seems like it has no resistance to it... so your right return spring has probabbly quit.lever goes back to starting position by itself....

If it had a good spring than you should need to lean on the lever with your palm to cycle it. If you can push it with your thumb then you have found your issue :)

someone who last ran it cranked it a few times can this destroy the cav injection pump...opened the pump bleeder screws on to p of the injection pump and fuel there.

I had this same problem with m MF 165. It wouldn't start after setting all winter. There was no fuel to the injectors. I took the pump apart and found the high pressure plungers were stuck,I freed them up and put it back together. It runs fine now.

If there's any traces of water in the fuel I'd suspect injection pump trouble. Repair a lot that set awhile and won't start that have metering valve, plungers, regulator piston, etc. Bio-fuel will cause trouble too with engine that set.

Sounds like your filters are jelled up. Do you have at least 1/2 number 1 and 1/2 number 2 fuel in the tank? If it stays below 0 you should be running straight #1 fuel.

thers a mix of #1 and 2 in the tank...fuel flows and looks clear put it into a glass...changed out the lift pump am bleeding it now...plus antifreeze for fuel in tank..

never took one apart...long time since i changed one though...timing after you pull it off... yes ...am not sure on this engine you go for timing marks...where.

have barred it over several times..have fuel up to cav pump..nothing beyond...wonder if its frozen in the pump been 40 deg last few days... had the block heater plugged in too...drinnles of fuel at bleeder screws on top of cav pump....

Are you getting any fuel past the filters? Did you change the lift pump? Crack the line on the output side of the filter block and see if anything comes out while cranking. If not your filters are plugged.

Mine won't start without the lift pump working. It went out recently and it would start on starting fluid and quit immediately. I replaced the lift pump and it started right up.

okay... have othewr things going on at the time being this one will have to sit... wonder if pistons stuck in cav pump.... never saw that before routinely let this tractor sit for long periods though.. when temps warm up consistently to 60's will try again... taking cav pump off and opening up shoudnt be too hard right... any clues would help..thanks all.

I noticed you said you had changed the filters. Did you use the right rubber gaskets with the filters? I know that sounds stupid, but there are gaskets in the box that will fit inside the filter lip & they will cover up the fuel flow. You have to use the ones that will go inside the groove on the filter housing. We worked for 2 week ends and finally rebuilt a 165 Massey and had the injector pump rebuilt (needed it any way) just to find this out. Didn't even occur to me or my neighbor that put them in the wrong place to check them. Keith
