Repair Shop for Planetaries

My planetary seals are leaking on my 1965 Massey Ferguson 165. I don't have the time to repair myself. Does anyone know of a good repair facility around the Southwest Missouri area that would be competent in repairing these? If needed I could take off the axles and ship them if a repair facility had a stellar reputation but was located too far to drive. I just don't want to take them somewhere and "hope for the best."

Hello Steven, have not seen any postings from you for a long time....everything must have been running OK. Presumably you are talking about the outer hub seals leaking. Wherever you decide to have them repaired make sure that they have the CORRECT puller to remove the epicyclic hub (planetary). Originally a manual screw puller was used but this has now been superceded by a hydraulic one. Normally it is only MF dealers who will have this puller. Good luck.

Thanks for the help, David. Everything has been running fairly well as far the Massey goes. I've noticed the oil leaks getting worse and my wheels are constantly oil soaked. Probably more irritating than anything but one never knows when they could just let loose. What happens if you use the wrong puller? Does something break? Are there any bearings that need to be checked for pre-load?

Hello Steven,
Perhaps not so much using the wrong puller as one which is capable of pulling the hub off. Without the correct attachment to the hub it might be possible to break or damage the hub. If brute force is used incorrectly that could damage the hub also. No pre-loads to worry about.

Yes indeed, they seem very knowledgeable and more than willing to work with me. I think I'm going to give them a try. I tried a different dealer and they quoted $1700 labor and did not seem very interested in the project. Thanks for your input. Of course my first choice would have been David P. but I've not been able to get him to relocate his shop to Missouri.

My brother did some of the work on the planetaries on his 150, he took them apart, and got the parts that were needed. Then he had the dealer put them back together because of the special tools need for the job. It still wasn't a cheap job some 25 or something years ago.
