MF40 Diesel Tank Issue

Fuel line goes into tank near the battery location, Line was wet, went to adjust and the assembly separated from the tank. It looks like it may have been repaired prior to my ownership.

Drained tank (Because I had too gravity ya know!)

Should I;

JB weld or similar reattach

Drill self tap and reattach with an outer seal

Brazen back together

Ideas?

Have repaired several tank leaks, both gas and diesel. Drain the tank, then with the cap off while the repair is made KEEP AIR MOVING INSIDE THE TANK! Have used a small air pressure regulator for years this way. Must use the same repair as tank had before, solder or braze as needed. Keep the air going until tank is cool. Been repairing tanks that way for years..

The line is adjacent to where the battery is located, Between engine vibration and the battery not adequately secured the line was seeping (wet) when I touched the line to see if I could locate the reason for the leak i realized the sealed (eye shape) part was separating then under a full tank of fuel, popped off. I have drained the fuel and observed two screw holes in the wall of the tank but not on the part that came off. Not sure yet if it was brazen or JB welded on...Will need to look at it in better light

Appears to have been repaired prior to my ownership (two years now) Vibration seems to be the culprit

If it was only jb welded on then you'll need to scrape that off and braze it on properly. Jb weld is fuel "resistent" but not proof.
Make sure you wash that tank out really well and leave in the sun for a couple days to bake out any residue that might go boom on ya. Even after that you'll need to flow air, like dieseltech said, or CO2 through the tank while you weld it. I have decent luck hooking up an exhaust hose to a car or truck exhaust pipe and flow the engine exhaust into the tank while welding on it. Take out the float assembly of course to vent the exaust or air.

My old mod 65 Diesel had the same thing happen. I drilled it out and replaced with a new fitting. Used a brass fitting and used Teflon (pipe) tape. Never had another issue.

Cost about 5 bucks or less best I remember. Just make sure to clean the tank good. I used a shop vac and had my son hold the nozzle under it while I drilled it out. Had little to no shavings inside that way.

Good luck.
