Power steering leak on mf 65

There's an mf-65 for sale in my area for 1300. Very little rust, everything works, but there's a leak in the power steering.

How hard/expensive would it be to fix a leak like that? Is the p.s a rare part? Just trying to figure out if it'd be worth my while

The ps is not all that rare, and its not too hard to fix depending on your mechanical abilities. How expensive depends on what the problem is, and you will probably find something else with the steering that needs repair while you have it apart.

Well, i'm not super mechanically gifted, but i learn quick. I think if i bought the service manual off ebay or something i'd be ok. Worst case scenario cost wise, assuming everythings wrong, how much would that be?

A service manual will help, if you are in North America you can look up part numbers here http://agcopartsbooks.com/PartsBooksN/login.aspx?region=NorthAmerica (log in at view books). For a shop manual you can look, and see if agco has them http://www.agcopubs.com/ some manuals from other places are bad re-prints. As far as the cost of parts to repair everything to do with the power steering all depends on who you get your parts from. Best thing to do is to get the part numbers you need, and shop around for who has the best price. You could spend $10 to possibly $1000, it all depends on what all parts are needed.

I'm not trying to be rude with this reply, but if you want better answers you're just going to have to supply some more info.

What we have now is equivalent to, " Honey the car just went clang chucka chuka bing zing." " How long will it take you to fix it ?"

Does the power steering really work? Both directions? (You stated everything works)

Is the leak a gusher or a seep?

Coming from the side of machine near the pump or up front?

Possibly a hose?

Are you sure it is power steering fluid and not anti-freeze?

Help us out a little. Ptfarmer is a great source of info but you need to help him a little.

I have NO experience with your concerns, however, here are several pics. from a manual I have:

It would appear there were updates on the "RAMS/ACTUATORS" as the years progressed:

DEALER SERVICE LIBRARY:

MF Technical service Manual:

Not rude, totally understandable. The reason for the lack of info is that i haven't had a really close look at it yet. I've seen the owner driving it around so i know it runs, and the pto+hydraulics all work. Don't know about the leak though. I'm going to see it tomorrow.

I was just trying to get a general ballpark figure to see if the cost of fixing it would put it out of my price range. From the responses i am getting, it seems like worst case is around 1000 ish, which is still totally reasonable to me

Sorry about the vagueness, i'll give you guys an update once i look at it tomorrow. I'll know more then.

Thanks for the manual page john deere d, that'll help me know where to look tomorrow

Once you work on it you will get a better understanding on how the system works, even though it may look intimidating at first. Give it a really good cleaning, then have someone work the steering while you looks for leaks.

Update: it's a very slow leak coming from the cylinder up front.turning the wheel to one side or the other doesn't make the leak get any worse (or the increase is so small i don't notice it). Worn out seal maybe? Thats what it looks like to me.

If you need to work on control valve;

Here's a photo of my 150 PS cylinder and control valve. There is a spiral wound retaining ring behind seal. It must be removed to get spool out and replace o-ring. I used a dental pick to get ring out, spool also has a spring behind retaining ring. Dust cover on o-ring side is held by three drive rivets.

If you just need the seals where the rod comes out of the cylinder you need part numbers 1754191M1 Seal, and 1752649M1 Seal. If you need the entire cylinder seal kit part number 830860M92. Should you need the for the spool valve on top of the cylinder they are sold separately.

Looks like you got some good information from others here. I redid mine about 4 years ago as others stated and pictured not too hard to do. Just a heads up if you redo the cylinder seals and it only turns one direction or the other better it may just need re-adjusted on the top of the cylinder.

Jack up the front of the tractor and have a friend turn the wheel. (while engine is running) Back off the retainer nut and adjust the bolt in or out depending on the direction it wont turn and hold it in place with the screwdriver when you get where you like it. Then tighten the retainer nut. Not hard to do but it does not take much of a turn on to make a big difference. It is touchy.

You should not need to do this if you just replace the seals on the lines. My terms my not be correct either but Im getting old and cant remember exactly. Just did not want you to panic if you have it happen.

Good luck
