Massey Ferguson 50 PTO Question

Fired up the MF50 diesel this morning to do a little bush hogging and when I went to engage the PTO - nothing but grinding. Never had this problem before. Question is - is this a clutch adjustment or something more severe?

I thought maybe the tranny oil was just cold and allowing everything to spin a bit with the clutch pushed in. So I stopped the engine, engaged the PTO, started it and went about mowing for a few hours. Got done, everything is warmed-up (including me... ) and tried the PTO again - same deal, grinding and no slowing down of the gears.

What do you think the problem is and the potential fix?

Thanks!

The right answer depends...... when did the pto last function correctly ?

I can say with 99% certainty that it is NOT a cold oil issue.

If your pto worked fine this summer, you now have: 1) rusted/stuck clutch disc or 2) broken internal clutch release parts.

Did you see if the PTO would release with the mower load? That could mean a rusted disc, or the linkage adjustments need reset. May also need the three internal PTO release bolts reset also as the main drive disc gets thinner.

If it just stuck, hopefully that is what it is, as it was working properly the last time you used it,

Get in some very heavy grass, go slow
as the tractor pto
is really pulling hard, push the clutch pedal down again and again as if you were releasing the pto to take it out of gear, hopefully that action will allow the stuck clutch pad to break loose, as it's under heavy load

If not, guess if adjusting does not work you are going to be replacing a pto clutch,

Might as well do the whole clutch thing when you have it apart,

Thanks everyone - I'm thinking rusted/stuck. I never thought to see if it would disengage with the clutch, but will check that too.

The PTO worked perfectly prior to this, so I'm leaning to a rusted/stuck clutch. I'll post back in a few days.

Thanks!
