Is This Right?

The top of my 230 diesel block has 4 what looks like freeze plugs with holes drilled in them. Two has big holes and 2 has small holes. Is that supposed to be like that? I've never been into a Perkins before so I don't know. I do know however all of the other stuff that the previous engine builder screwed up.Is it supposed to have those freeze plugs or do I take them out? And is it normal for all of the head bolt holes to have hely coils in them? Thanks for your help with this rebuild.

Try to post pics of those freeze plugs. Might have been a cab heater or block heater project at one time....As far as helicoils??? .... I don't tink so meester.... so yeah we need pictures...

Sorry the pictures didn't down load.

You can try for clearer pics, but others who know Perkins better will soon tell you for certain. Don't look right to me....

Yes, Perkins did control the water circulation with restricted plugs like you have, while some other engines do the same thing with the head gasket. Heli-coils were never used originally, but is a good way to correct hole thread damage. Best results is with engine studs so there's a steady pull when the nut is drawn tight, instead of a bolt being turned into the repair coil.

Thanks Tony and Dieseltech. This is the first Perkins I've operated on so I wasn't sure about that. The head bolts held good but some of the hely coils tore up when I took the bolts out. I'll replace them. And I really appreciate the help and I'm sure I'll need some more.
